Dear Sofi,
Lately I've been having trouble falling asleep at night. Can you recommend a yoga practice that might help.
— Thanks, Edna M.
Hi Edna,
Insomnia usually results from an over active mind state. I would recommend 8 rounds of nadi sodhana (Alternate Nostril Breathing) and 5 minutes of a seated meditation practice right before bed.
- Close the right nostril with your right thumb and inhale through the left nostril. Do this to the count of four seconds.
- Immediately close the left nostril with your right ring finger and little finger, and at the same time remove your thumb from the right nostril, and exhale through this nostril. Do this to the count of eight seconds. This completes a half round.
- Inhale through the right nostril to the count of four seconds. Close the right nostril with your right thumb and exhale through the left nostril to the count of eight seconds. This completes one full round.
You may wish to increase the number of rounds of nadi sodhana as well as the length of your meditation practice as you time goes on. I would also suggest staying away from the t.v., computer, or telephone for at least one hour before bed. Let me know how it goes for you.
— Love, Sofi
